MakiMode is a focus tool that blocks distracting websites and hides addictive feeds. We designed it to keep your data on your own machine. Here is exactly what it does.
What MakiMode stores
Your settings — which sites you block, which feed filters are on, your focus goal and streak. These are saved with Chrome's built-in storage.sync, so Chrome syncs them across devices where you're signed into the same profile. We don't run a server for this.
Optional features that send data
Cross-profile sync (optional). If you turn on "Sync across profiles" and generate or enter a sync key, your settings are stored under that key on a cloud sync service so another Chrome profile can read them. No account, name, or email is involved — only your settings and the random key.
Site icons. To show an icon next to each blocked site, MakiMode requests that site's favicon from Google's public favicon service. This sends only the site's domain name to Google.
The display (optional hardware). If you connect a MakiMode display over USB, the extension sends your focus state and display settings to the device over that cable. Nothing else leaves your computer.
What MakiMode does NOT do
No analytics, tracking, advertising, or fingerprinting.
No collection of your browsing history. Content scripts only check whether the current page matches your own block list — they don't record or transmit the pages you visit.
We never sell or share your data. There's nothing to sell.
Permissions, and why
storage — to save your settings and goal.
alarms — to periodically refresh your synced settings.
tabs — to open the MakiMode dashboard and refresh blocking when you switch tabs.
host access (all sites) — so the blocker can run on any site you choose to block. It does nothing on sites that aren't on your list.
